Album
From the Gran Sasso to South America, through landscapes, encounters and the pleasures of cooking. Sandro Visca’s personal album, 1960–2015.
Travel as experience
Sandro Visca has remained faithful to the cultural convictions underpinning his commitment to doing things well, including in the other activities he pursues with passion and dedication: above all, travelling and cooking.
Deeply attached to his homeland and the mountains of the Gran Sasso, and fascinated by travel as an all-encompassing experience of creativity and understanding, in 1978 he organised an expedition to South America focused on the everyday cultures of Peru: the Andes, Sierra villages and remote historic settlements in the celebrated archaeological areas of Cuzco and Puno. From Iquitos he travelled upstream along the Amazon into the rainforest, while continuing to explore the deep, interwoven connections with his own homeland.
Long interested in human history and in people’s relationships with places and local customs, he has continued to undertake demanding and sometimes dangerous journeys alongside his work. In 1998 he set out from Caracas by Jeep, crossing El Tigre and the Orinoco to explore Venezuela’s Gran Sabana, from Canaima to Roraima and onwards into Brazil. Journeys to Turkey and Egypt followed; in 1999 he travelled 1,500 kilometres through the Tunisian desert in North Africa. He visited Crete in 2001, Mauritius in 2007 and Morocco in 2011, travelling from Marrakech across the High Atlas to the desert. The Italian islands also remained important destinations, especially Giglio, a frequent retreat since his years in Rome in the 1960s.
